MUMES Festival 2017 defends
multiculturality of southern Tenerife
MUMES Festival 2017 (Mestizo Music and More Festival) has already started. The 14th Edition began last Thursday, the 6th of July 2017, and it will last until the 27th of this month. This year the guest country is Angola, which will share its folkloric music. That means dancing to the rhythm of kuduro and kizomba styles.
The event is split into various sections: a workshop, gigs, cinema, a photographic exposition and a ceremony in which the award for the work in favour of multiculturality will be given.
All of this defines the programming of the 14th Edition of this festival, which was born and is maintained as a way of integrating the many different cultures that coexist in southern Tenerife.
The Culture Patronage of Arona co organizes this edition of MUMES. To achieve the goal of managing it properly, it has the support of the Canary Government, as well as of the Cabildo of Tenerife. Furthermore, The African House and Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) collaborates with this event.
Angola, guest country of this edition
This year the lead nationality of MUMES is Angola. We will receive its traditional music and dances, such as kuduro and kizomba. This fact was possible from the very first day of the event, thanks to the presence of the group Elenco da Paz. This group was the winner of the 7th Edition of the Vis a Vis cultural project, which is organized by the African House of Angola.
The singers of Elenco da Paz are Fogo de Deus, Pai Gasilha, Manda Chuva and Negro 5. The four of them created this group in 2015, with the intention of transmitting social integration messages, so their presence in MUMES is even more logical.
Their music style combines electronic with hip hop and dancing, which gives them a special energy on stage. A strength they convert into something positive, as a way of developing some kind of artistic activism, which promotes the development and cohesion of their country.
The activities of MUMES started with Elenco da Paz. They were the teachers of a dance workshop, in which kuduro and kizomba dances were explained to the people that attended this meeting. This happened on the 6th of July, from 18:00 to 19:30 in the Cultural Centre of Los Cristianos.
In MUMES 2017 there habe been a series of musical performances, in which Elenco Da Paz is involved, too. The group gave a gig the past 8th of July outside the Cultural Centre of Los Cristianos, at 19:30.
Other groups that participated were Totó ST, which comes from Angola, as well, and Caracoles and DJ Víctor Caballeira, both canarian. The first one is a singer, songwriter and producer who fuses traditional sounds of his nation, such as kizomba, semba, kilapanga or konono, and is known for the way he sings and plays the guitar.
Caracoles is a canarian band. Its presence in this festival is due to the social rights activism that they have developed for many years. They have travelled with the band Pallasos en Rebeldía through the refugee camps of Greece. Furthermore, they went to schools and squares in Athens in order to send a pacifist and inclusive message. As a result, it seems to be quite logical that such a group participates in MUMES.
DJ Víctor Caballeira is a renowned musician who has been working in musical fusions for more than 20 years. He has worked in different places of the world, such as London, Madrid and Barcelona. His music has many references to different musical styles: soul, R&B, psicodelia, latin jazz or electro-indie.
Arona, citizens of the world
Another of the most important acts of this event is the photojournalism exposition, which has been called “Arona, citizens of the world”. It has been exposed in the lobby of the Cultural Centre of Los Cristianos, and in it you will be able to watch different faces of the many people who live in this municipality, known for its multinationality.
With this idea, the organizers want to express the multiculturality of this region of the island and, at the same time, they would like to support social integration of these many collectives. Through images, experiences of these people will be transmitted, and also their impression about living in Tenerife, as well as their arrival and adaptation to a new place of residence.
The opening of this photographic exhibition took place on Thursday, the 13th of July, at 20:00. After this act, the MUMES 2017 award ceremony happened. This prize is given to an activity which has supported multiculturality. The Exhibition can be visited from the 14th to the 31st of July, from 8:00 to 21:30 from Monday to Friday, and from 9:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays.
The coda to all these activities is a series of cinematographic screenings, which will take place in TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, an art centre placed in the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. As expected, the films have Angola as their main topic.
The first screening will happen on Thursday, the 20th of July, at 20:00. The movie is I love kuduro, a portuguese production of 2014, directed by Mario Patrocínio. The documentary explains the birth of this musical style in the center of Luanda, the capital of Angola, and how it progressively became more and more popular in the whole city, the whole country and, finally, the whole continent.
On next Thursday, the 27th of July, at 20:00 as well, the second screening will occur. In this case, the movie selected by MUMES Festival is Njinga, Queen of Angola, a fiction movie from 2013 produced in Angola ad directed by Sérgio Graciano. It is a historical drama which tells the story of a warrior woman who fought against the portuguese people in order to obtain the independence of Angola.
This has been our approach to MUMES Festival 2017. Music, photography, cinema and dance are the main topics of the event, which focuses its attention in multiculturality and social integration in southern Tenerife. In its 14th edition the guest country is Angola, so it is a huge opportunity to discover in deep the culture and history of a nation that normally remains unknown. These are all the reasons why we here, in the Blog of StarExcursions, encourage you to join this fusion and tolerance party.
